International volunteers can do much more than teaching English! By volunteering at a Vietnamese NGO, you bring new perspective and energy to make a difference in society. NGO placements are office-based and the role of the volunteer is dependent on the needs of the organization and the individual’s experience, skill set and interests. Through the NGO program, volunteers get an invaluable opportunity to work closely with local staff, gain insight and make an impact on social development on a more strategic level. Volunteers should be over the age of 20, creative, flexible, proactive and have excellent English skills.
This placement is ideal for those looking for a summer internship to complement their university or college studies, and those who have previous professional work experience in a the public or private sectors. CSDS has partnerships with several NGOs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and some NGO volunteers even work at the CSDS office! Our NGO partners work in several different issue areas including climate change, preservation, sustainable tourism, gender, youth empowerment, poverty and more!
NGO Placement volunteers stay a minimum of three months, in order to integrate effectively into the office environment. There are several areas of work that volunteers can support in local NGOs, including:
- Research on potential projects and monitoring and evaluation
- Teaching English to staff or proofreading English reports and documents
- Fundraising (individual and institutional)
- Website management and support
- Photography and social media management
- Report editing
- Developing project proposals
